Dr Mónica Furlano is a nephrologist with a particular focus on inherited kidney diseases and chronic kidney disease associated with urological conditions. She practises at UROS Associats and at Fundació Puigvert in Barcelona.
She specialises in the diagnosis and follow-up of inherited kidney diseases such as polycystic kidney disease, Alport syndrome, Fabry disease, tuberous sclerosis, ADTKD and other kidney diseases of genetic origin. Her work includes interpreting renal genetic testing, assessing family members and counselling on the risk of familial transmission.
She monitors kidney function in patients with obstructive uropathy, urinary tract malformations or vesicoureteral reflux, or following total or partial nephrectomy. She also treats patients with impaired kidney function, chronic kidney disease, proteinuria, haematuria, high blood pressure and recurrent kidney stones.
She offers specialist second opinions for patients with complex, inherited or unexplained kidney diseases.
She holds a PhD in Medicine from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (cum laude), is an Associate Clinical Professor at the UAB and co-director of the Master’s Degree in Inherited Kidney Diseases. She has completed specialised training in genetic kidney diseases at the Institut Imagine des Maladies Génétiques – Hôpital Necker in Paris and with the Renal Genetics team at the Royal Free Hospital in London. She has completed the ERKNet Postgraduate Curriculum and holds European certification as a Rare Kidney Disease Specialist.
She combines her clinical practice with research, participation in clinical trials and the development of national and international clinical guidelines and consensus documents.
